Hammer of the North by Wodenswolf Hammer of the North by Wodenswolf
Well, I was thinking about doing a Thor's Hammer in a pure knotwork style since a while. This one is thought to be carved in bone - lets see how much of the detail will be possible in a pendant of a reasonable size.
Tried to keep the knotwork as norse as possible and don't let it look too "celtic" like most of the contemporary Hammers unfortunately do...

The title is a tribute to my inspiration while working on this design - GRAND MAGUS new album "Hammer of the North" is certainly one of the best metal albums of the present - if not the best at all.

Btw. here's the realization of this design carved in bone:

great...I think you can achieve it...I have been very interested in creating my own Norse art for quite a while now, so through research and practice know what you mean about the fine line between Norse and Celtic aesthetics...obviously a Mjollnir needs to be symmetrical, but I find that Norse knotwork is generally 'looser', freer and less symmetrical, or only semi-symmetrical...

That is awesome. Will the gaps in between the knotwork actually be holes in the bone, or just carved down deeper? It doesn't seem like the former would be possible, but you do seem to work miracles...

Thanks for sharing badass music too! Have you heard the "Thor" album by Wizard?

I think I am as curious as you how this will turn out in the end.
I thought to make at least some of the gaps real "holes" - we will see ;)

Hadn't heard Wizard before and I must admit that this sounds a bit too much like typical German Power Metal for me...
However - thanks for the hint!

I'm excited to see how it comes out!

I like Wizard just because it's a lot of fun--then again, I don't have too much German power metal in my music library, so maybe it's just new to me. ;) What kinds of metal are you mainly in to?

What kinds of Metal? Hard question - I really don't care about styles and subgenres anymore. I could just list a lot of bands instead...

Hah! The opposite for me. Once I fell into folk metal, I could easily say that it's my favorite genre. :) You like Korpiklaani?

Not really, this folk metal thing is to funny for my taste, I like it a bit heavier...
However music like Korpiklaani or Finntroll is nice during summertime while making a barbeque and drinking some beer :)
